The front-wheel-drive 140S is based on the Chevrolet Cruze platform. If you own a Chevrolet Volt, and recent news from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the Volt’s battery could catch on fire has you worried, General Motors says it will buy back your Volt. Last week, GM announced it would offer free loaner cars to Volt owners until NHTSA’s investigation is complete.
“Such a buyback is unusual for car companies, which typically institute recalls when regulators or customers report problems with cars or parts,” says The New York Times. “Ford, however, offered to buy back older model Windstar vans last year after investigations into rear axle problems.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, GM Spokesman Greg Martin says GM has sold about 6,000 Volt models, and as of Dec. 2, “about 30 owners have taken the company up on its loaner offer. Martin said details of how a repurchase plan would work had not been determined.”

Neither car will sell in large numbers, but they should generate lots of profit from buyers who want the newest, fastest and best.

Believe anything Hollywood says and you’ll already be thinking all the cool coppers drive around in Ferraris – they certainly do in Magnum, Miami Vice and Bad Boys 2. But back in the ‘60s the Italian police drove one for real.

The lucky driver’s name was Marshal Armando Spatafora, something of a legend in Rome it seems, and his car was a 250 GTE. Together, they patrolled the streets of Rome for nearly a decade, hunting down serious criminals in the kind of heroic chases Hollywood directors would kill for.

For its day, the car was seriously quick, with a 240bhp engine that could sling-shot it speedily round the tight Roman streets. As you’d expect, no car of the day stood a chance, especially as the GTE shared its roots with the 250 GTO, one of Ferrari’s finest supercars and racers. The 250 GTE was also the first mass-produced four-seat Ferrari, so there was actually a bit of space to stick any arrestees. But it looked so damn cool you’d probably want to commit some crime just to see it in action. These days it's as rare as a straight politician but the actual car used still survives in a museum of police cars in Rome.

Considering what might be its already alarming resemblance to a UPS delivery truck, does the Honda Element really need a monochromatic coat of root beer coloured paint? My 12-year-old daughter took one look at it, wrinkled her nose and pronounced the verdict: "Ug-leee!"

Of course, we tend not to agree on everything, and I've always admired the Element's funky charms. What it lacks in foxiness, it makes up in, ah, boxiness.

Now in its sixth model year, the four-seater Element combines compact outside dimensions with surprising inner space. Although based on Honda's crossover CR-V, the Element is shorter and narrower, but taller, and seems much bigger inside than its exterior would suggest.

The spatial distortions get even more pronounced after folding and flipping the rear seats, which align against the interior walls. Better still, remove the rear seats entirely, providing room for camping equipment, bikes, scuba gear, surfboards, or simply more boxes to put inside your box.

Removing the pair of rear seats won't allow anywhere for the kids to sit, mind you, but the Element is not for every family. My 15-year-old son is bigger than me now, and he took a dim view of the Element's reverse-hinge passenger doors, which save the space normally allocated to a pillar, but can't be opened from the inside. This seems to stir up resentment among older children, which is why they also might not hear your strict instructions that the rear doors must be closed first and then the front doors slammed, not the other way around.

If not ideal for adolescents, the Element has found favour with the canine set, who voted the design Dog Vehicle of the Year in 2007, a dubious-sounding award to me, but clearly meant as high praise among pooch haulers.

In my Toronto neighbourhood, where street parking space is at a premium, the relatively smaller dimensions of the Element and short overhang beyond the wheels helped it fit in nicely. (No rude notes left under the wiper as there was with that Range Rover I drove.)

Although initially the Element's higher seating position, upright steering wheel and steep windshield angle seem truckish, it delivers a quick and nimble steering response and provides a tight turning circle that suits an urban environment.

The SC version tested here comes with stiffer, sportier suspension and a lower ride height, which permits a brisk cornering approach with relatively little body roll. The tradeoff is choppier ride quality, especially over small irregularities or expansion strips, though the big bumps are handled well.

The short wheelbase also emphasizes the pitching over rough pavement, which was why I heard a familiar complaint from Princess Gravol in the back on a weekend trip. I tried distracting her by mentioning that the Prime Minister's daughter was also reported to suffer from motion sickness. Chevy Tahoe Lights. Chevy Tahoe Lights.

There may be many reasons why you might want to ride a motorcycle or scooter, but clearer air should not be among them.

Despite their reputation as being more earth-friendly than other motorized forms of transport, two-wheelers are actually some of the biggest polluters on the road.

"The cleanest motorcycle engine is far dirtier than the dirtiest car," says Warren Milner, Honda Canada's senior motorcycle manager.

In fact, two-wheelers appear to be so dirty that Wheels was unable to convince a local dealer to run a Drive Clean test on them because the emissions could seriously damage the testing machines.

This might be news to advocates of two-wheelers as a more earth-friendly means of commuting in congested urban areas like the GTA.

The confusion seems to arise because motorcycles and scooters burn far less fuel than even the most fuel-efficient car or truck. Carbon dioxide emissions are directly proportional to the amount of gas you burn, meaning two-wheelers contribute fewer greenhouse gas emissions per kilometre than their four-wheeled cousins.

But that's only one part of the air quality equation. When it comes to emissions of nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons – so-called smog-forming pollutants – motorcycles and scooters emit many times more per kilometre than cars and trucks.

In the lead up to tougher emissions rules in 2005 – the first in 27 years – the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found the standards for motorcycles and scooters to be 90 times dirtier than those for cars. One of its comparisons was a Yamaha YZR R6, which emitted 4.19 grams/mile of hydrocarbons compared to a Dodge Durango with 4WD, which emitted .073 gm/mile.

A widely cited Swiss study from 2005 of eight different types of scooters and motorcycles found that despite the proportionately smaller number of two-wheelers on the road, they accounted for about one-fifth of nitrous oxide emissions of the cars.

VW revitalises the Golf

What is it?

The Golf is a serious earner for Volkswagen with some 26 million examples having been built since it was introduced in 1974. This new car is the sixth generation model, Volkswagen deliberately designing its new hatchback to look like its predecessors. Seen for the first time you could be forgiven for thinking that Volkswagen has perhaps been a bit too successful, the sixth car to wear the Golf badge looking very similar to the MkV. There are some key differences though, parking the new car alongside the outgoing model revealing them more readily. A bolder, Scirocco-inspired grille is framed by larger headlamps, while the taillights are slimmer. The flanks now feature a sharp shoulder crease, the new Golf having a more solid, assertive overall look.

Is it any good?

Volkswagen identified several key areas to improve the Golf, refinement and quality being among them. Always considered more upmarket than the class norm the Golf's interior now lives up to that reputation, borrowing elements from its Eos and Scirocco relatives to good effect. White backlighting now features on the instruments, the materials throughout the cabin an improvement over the old car. The interior's style is functional rather than fun, but it's hugely comfortable thanks to supportive seats and excellent refinement.

The Golf is seriously quiet, the engines barely heard from inside during normal driving, road and wind noise also isolated very well. In line with the current environmental concerns all the engines are cleaner and more efficient than before. None more so than the BlueMotion model, which emits just 99g/km of CO2 and has the potential to achieve 74mpg from its 1.6-litre TDI engine. Dynamically the Golf isn't able to topple Ford's Focus for driver pleasure, but it grips hard, rides smartly and controls body roll very well. The steering is nicely weighted, though there's not much communication at the wheel's chunky rim. DDC adaptive chassis control is an option for those wanting to choose between comfort, sport or a default setting, the differences so slight it's not really worth the additional money. DSG six and seven-speed transmissions are also available, the twin-clutch gearboxes shifting quickly and smoothly.

Should I call the bank manager?

Volkswagen is only giving guide prices for the Golf at the moment, between £13,000 and £21,000. That latter number will rise when the GTI arrives mid-2009, other models expected to join the range including that economical BlueMotion and a TwinDrive plug-in hybrid. The Golf has traditionally been a bit more costly than its mainstream rivals, buyers happy to pay a little more for the badge and the feeling of quality. Expect the new Golf to be no different. Start adding the DSG automatic, that DDC chassis control and kit like satellite navigation and you'll increase its price a good deal further. All come with air conditioning as standard though, along with a single CD player and seven airbags to help protect you in an accident.

Summary

Volkswagen has concentrated on key areas with its new Golf and the result is successful. It's very refined, the quality inside and out is improved and it drives better than its predecessor did with fine body control and ride comfort. It might not look radically different, Volkswagen instead taking a gentle evolutionary approach to its style. Lamborghini has given the Gallardo the same aggressive makeover the Murcielago enjoyed when it morphed into the LP640. In the same way, the Gallardo now has jutting front air intakes and a generally more muscular stance. There are also changes to the aerodynamics to make the LP560-4 slice through the air with greater efficiency, while revisions to the suspension improve the handling. Deep within the core of the LP is a larger V10 engine, now sporting a 5.2-litre capacity and barking 552bhp. The LP560-4 strikes far into the territory of its big brother with a top speed of 202mph too.

Is it any good?

When you get to a certain level of performance car, you normally experience diminishing returns on the amount you spend. After all, no matter how much money you throw at a car, there's only so much you can shave off of its 0-62mph time or increase its top speed. Not so with the LP560-4. It moves the game on considerably from the previous Gallardo - not that there was much wrong with that car. The extra power of the 5.2-litre V10 engine, some 552bhp at a sweltering 8,000rpm, is enough to see the LP cover 0-62mph in just 3.7 seconds, regardless of whether you prefer the standard six-speed manual gearbox or paddle-change E-gear transmission that does away with the clutch pedal. The Gallardo LP560-4 is not just about straight line speed - though it makes a good case for itself as a dragster thanks to standard four-wheel drive. This is a supercar that loves corners and the all-wheel drive actively helps put the power down on the road to great effect, sucking it to the surface and forcing it out of corners with amazing pace. The steering is keenly judged for weight and feel, while the ride copes with all that British roads can throw at it without it sulking.
